Just a quick note to let you all know that the Coffee House scheduled for this Saturday (june 26th) at Under The willow in Dawson Creek has been cancelled. Due to a serious lack of performers and organizers (there’s just so much going on in people’s lives right now!) we’re going to have to let this one slide by…..

The Peace Region Songwriters Association is planning to start the series again in September so we hope to have everyone out for our shows in the fall…….performers and audience both.
Thanks so much to all who have made this past year such a success….Jennifer for lettting us use her space, Tracy for hosting the evenings, Bill for supplying the sound gear and expertise, all the performers for the music and all of the folks who came to listen and support us as we strummed, hummed and blew our own horns (or flutes, as the case may be).
Stay Tuned,
ian
Hi there, Folks……………..

Here’s a quick update on what’s happening in our area for live music (that I know about, at least)….

We had originally planned on our June Library Coffee House for tomorrow (June 5) but it’s Grad weekend…..we’d lose many of our performers and audience to the ceremonies as well as  parking spots!

The Library Coffee House will now be on Saturday June 12 from 6-10 pm….Books ‘N Bytes will be open as usual so be prepared for snacks and treats! We will be raising money for the Cancer Society this month…all proceeds that end up in the Pink Can will go to that organization so perhaps this would be a good time to bring all that loose change you’ve been hoarding in those quart sealers (folding money is accepted, as well). This is also our last scheduled Coffee House until the fall so come out to hear all your favorite local musicians!
There is a poster attached to this email that you can download, print off and place in a strategic location for everyone else to see…..another fine one from the computer of Kim Slack….thanks again, Kim!!

Under the Willow in Dawson Creek will be holding their last Coffee House of this season on Saturday June 26…..(from 6:30 -10:00)……the Peace Region Songwriters Association will be presenting “My Peace River Home”…a series of tunes and readings that members have put together concerning this awesome area that we live in…..I’ve heard the pieces and there’s a lot of grand stuff to be heard.

Stay tuned….

Here are a couple of musical events happening in the Peace area that I’m aware of…….

Saturday, May 8 is the monthly Chetwynd Public Library’s Coffee House….loads of local talent, fine snacks and drinks (Books ‘N Bytes will be open) and an evening of music. The doors open and the music starts at 6:00 and goes until 10:00. The donation tin will be making the rounds again to pay for the sound system and future costs. Don’t forget to bring a few $$ – you’re not likely to get a better deal for an evening of fine entertainment!

Also on that night is the Womensong concert in Fort St. John -  I sent a poster out a few days ago – some fine acts performing there including Shannon Ingersoll, Lindsay Pratt and Grande Prairie’s The Dandy Lionesses. The show is partially to raise funds for the FSJ Women’s Center.

Saturday, May 29 is the Coffee House at Under The Willow in Dawson Creek (beside the Health Food store). It starts at 6:30 with an open mic for those who want to get up and play and then around 7:30 they’ll be featuring Ian Smith and Friends (hey! that’s me!! and some of my Friends!) – I’ve got some of my own music as well as tunes that have influenced me over the years. I also have a bunch of very talented musicians to help me out thru the set so it’s something I’m sure looking forward to. After that, there’ll be an open mic again for some more good music.

Saturday, June 5 will be the last Coffee House of the season at the Chetwynd Public Library. Summer will be here before we know it and I’m sure that there’ll be no shortage of opportunities for players and listeners to get together over the summer months but we’re going to take a break until September. Come on out and help us finish off the year. We’re discussing having this as a fundraiser for the Cancer Society – the Relay for Life is on about that time and we all know folks who have been affected by the disease…stay tuned for more on this.

That’s as much as I seem to know right now….if I’m missing anything then drop me a line and let me know. I hope to see you at these events!!

Stay Tuned,

Here we are in April and here’s some of what is happening around Chetwynd and Dawson Creek as far as music and events……..

This Saturday, April 10 at the Chetwynd Public Library is the monthly Coffee House and we’re featuring Steve Slade again. Steve always puts on a fine show featuring his own music – a fine voice and is also a great guitarist and harmonica player. Steve’s on his way back home to Whitehorse and will be in the South Peace for a few stops so we’re lucky to have him here. Steve will play for 1/2 the evening and then we’ll have an open mic for local talent. Rumors are floating about people that are planning to play and sing – some of our favorites as well as a new face/voice or two. The doors open at 6:00, the music starts shortly after and it usually runs until 10:00. (Come by a bit early and help us move tables and set things up – or else if you’re hanging around later on you can help us put things back where they belong.)

The following day (Sunday, April 11) is the Dawsion Creek Rotary auction and Leo Sabulsky has asked me to email you all to see if there are performers interested in providing music as part of the activities. You can email him….. leo@peacefm.ca for more details.

On Thursday April 15 Ken Whiteley will be performing at The Round House in what will be the final Home Routes concert of the season ……I think this is a grand way to end the first year of these shows; Ken is a veteran Canadian “folkie” and has a wealth of styles, techniques and history to draw from for his shows….check out his website and his music; it’s great stuff.
Admission is $15/person at the door and, as always, the money goes directly to the performer – no agents, commissions or industry folk.

Jojo Bean’s Coffee and Cream will be open on April 21 for a show by Sean Ashby. Sean (among other things) has been Sarah McLaughlin’s guitar player as well as having a long history of studio work. I saw him a few years ago and he is a very good guitar player….it should be a great show.

On Saturday, April 24 there will be a Coffee House at Under The Willow in Dawson Creek – another of Jennifer’s continuing collaborations with the Peace Region Songwriter’s Association. Tis moth’s featured artist is Dawson Creek’s Barb Munro (rumor has it that she will be heading up the Barb Munro Trio) with a nice blend of her own great powerful songs as well as a cover or two, as well.

If you think that there’s nothing else going on, you’d be wrong. I’ll send out more info when I get it but in the meantime…….

stay tuned,

Hi folks…..come and check out the March Coffee House!  Saturday, March 13th at the Chetwynd library.
This one promises to be a little different than some of the others we’ve recently been having; it’s Spring Break, some of the “regulars” are unable to attend and we’re expecting a few new voices/faces there.
Books’n'Bytes will be open for treats and beverages – there’ll also be the usual donation tin to help us cover the costs of putting these events on. (Feel free to exercise your generosity and appreciation.)

Stay tuned,

Here’s what’s going to be happening in the area over the next 5 weeks for musical events!

Saturday, January 16
The first Chetwynd  Public Library Coffee House of the New Year runs from 6:00 to 10:00 – once again, I’m hosting the evening but it’ll be the last time I do so due to other commitments (this is a hint that we’re looking for one or more folks to step up to the microphone and let the audience know what’s going on thru the evening – it’s an easy gig ’cause everyone tells you what you should be doing!).  This event is getting bigger all the time – non-stop music for 4 hours, lots of treats and eats from Books’N'Bytes, great company as well as lots of fun for all.

Friday, January 22

Joanne at JoJo Bean’s Coffee and Cream (downtown Chetwynd) is opening her doors every second Friday night for an open-mic evening. Again, lots of good food and tea/coffees will be available for your snacking pleasure (I do urge you to buy goodies at the events you attend because it makes it possible for these folks to provide us the space for the music to happen.). Thanks go out to Joanne for taking the big step that allows us to play. For those who haven’t been there yet, the cafe is smaller than the Library so it has a more intimate feel; this also makes it a bit less intimidating for some musicians that are still a bit nervous when they’re performing.

Saturday, January 30

There is a coffee house at the Saulteau First Nations this evening. They’ll be featuring Niska Napoleon (this is definitely worth taking in!) as well as being an open mic event. I’ll send out more details regarding this event when I know more.

Saturday, January 30 (a busy evening!)

Under the Willow in Dawson Creek (beside the health food store downtown) is hosting another end-of-the-month afternoon/evening musical event. The Peace Region Songwriters Association will be holding their regular meeting at 4:30 and that will be followed by a Coffee House at 6:00 (I believe). This month’s show is featuring NightCap (Linda Connell Studley and Ian Smith – hey, that’s me!) for a set of music followed by an open mic for the rest of the show. There is a $5 cover charge for the evening and this money will be going to cover expenses such as PA rental, etc. I know that at least one of my DC guitar students is planning on performing and there’s no shortage of talent in Dawson Creek so you’re sure to hear good music that night

.Friday, February 5

JoJo Bean’s Coffee and Cream is having another open mic night.

Saturday, February 6

I just was notified today of a coffeehouse in Hudson’s Hope that evening. More details will be sent out when I know more myself!

Tuesday, February 9

The Home Routes concert series is beginning the New Year after the mid-winter break and we’re beginning with James Gordon (formerly of Tamarack, as well as an accomplished solo performer and songwriter). Once again, the Round House at The 40 Acre Farm will be the venue for the show and (free) popcorn will be available at intermission. Admission is $15 for the evening with all proceeds going to the musician – great music at a great price. Check out his website – www.jamesgordon.ca – for a better idea of who he is and what he does. Other performers in the series this spring are Ken Whiteley (March 10) and Annabelle Chvostek (April 15) so stay tuned for more news as those dates get closer.

Thursday, February 11

I just found out today that Barbara Adler is returning to Chetwynd with her accordian and her poetry and her performances…..more details to follow (I know, you just don’t think of poetry and accordians together, do you?). Start thinking about it………

Friday, February 12

Another Coffee House at Saulteau First Nations – apparently Niska Napoleon will be doing some travelling shortly after this show so it could be our last chance to see and hear her live for a while.

Saturday, February 13
The Chetwynd Public Library’s February Coffee House is happening this date (and just beforeValentine’s Day, too…….hmmm).

If you want to join our email list just send us a note at chetwyndcoffeehouse@yahoo.ca and ask to be put on the list.

stay tuned , Ian

This is just a quick note to say “Thanks!” to everyone who came out on Saturday night (Dec. 5) to the Library for the last Coffee House of 2009.

We had 4 solid hours of music ranging from re-worked Christmas tunes to original songs, cover versions, solo piano pieces (including an Oscar Peterson tune and a piece by a German folk group; both of them blew me away), metal guitar, pop tunes, sort-of karaoke as well as a lot of talent showing up from the high school courtesy of the students and Mr. Joyce…..I know I’m missing some stuff but the night was filled with music of all sorts!

A big Thank You to those folks that arrived early to help set up and those that stayed later to help put the Library back into shape for the next day (some of the fellows did both!) as well as everyone that dropped money into the donation tin – it helps us keep this all going!

Once again, another big round of applause to all those musicians (and listeners) who travelled from “away” to be here and share their music with us – the roads are never great at this time of the year and many stayed until near the end of the night before facing the long drive home.

I’ll send out an email soon with dates for the New Year’s series of shows – in the meantime, there may be another (smaller) venue developing for local talent that may happen on a weekly basis so I’ll let you know what’s happening with that, as well. As Dori Brown reminded us on Saturday, we have a pretty incredible bunch of talent and people here and we also have opportunities to hear and see them, too.

Stay Tuned,  Ian
